ATV Insurance
There is no better way to explore the outdoors than by jumping on an ATV and hitting the backcountry trails. These vehicles are growing in popularity as manufacturers are making them bigger and more powerful. And with this popularity, the All-Terrain Vehicle segment has been expanding beyond just the traditional saddle-seated one or two person four wheeled vehicle. Some of this expansion includes the following vehicle types:
- All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) are four wheeled vehicles with a saddle seat accommodating one operator and at most one passenger. This is traditionally what most people think of when mentioning an off-road vehicle. Recently manufacturers have increased the horsepower on these vehicles as adrenaline junkies look to push the limits of speed on the trails.
- Side-By-Sides (SxS) are the fast growing segment of the ATV industry. These vehicles have a bucket seat and allow for at least one passenger to sit next to the operator. Some of these vehicles allow for a total of four occupants while some are even six-seaters. These are widely considered safer than the traditional ATV due to six-point safety harnesses, roll-over protection structures, traction control, and anti-lock braking systems.
- Utility Terrain Vehicles (UTVs) come in three categories: Utility, Sport, and Sport Utility. Utility UTVs are primarily used to work on a farm or on job sites. They often have a bed on the back and have a high towing capacity. Sport UTVs are more like the SxS vehicles and are used for trail riding. And then the Sport Utility UTV bridges the gap between the two in that it has the hauling capacity of the Utility UTV and the speed performance of the Sport UTV.
Sandrails and dune buggies are often discussed when mentioning the ATV industry. Both of these vehicles are made to traverse sandy terrain rather than trail riding. But they share many of the same characteristics of UTVs and SxS vehicles in that they accommodate passengers and have many of the same safety features.

Commonly Asked Questions About ATV Insurance
How much is ATV Insurance?
The cost of ATV insurance depends on several factors including but not limited to: the driver, the vehicle being insured, your claims history and your credit. It also greatly depends on what coverage you decide to purchase such as comprehensive, collision or custom parts and equipment.
Do I need insurance for an ATV?
Whether or not ATV insurance is required varies by state and usage. For instance, if you are operating the vehicle on public land, you may be required to carry liability coverage on the ATV. Or, if you are operating the vehicle on private land or a farm, it may not be required. One last thing would be if you financed your ATV. If it is financed it is likely the bank would require you to carry full coverage on the vehicle. Check with your local insurance agency to determine what laws exist in your area.
What types of vehicles is ATV insurance for?
ATVs go by many names such as: 4-wheelers (or quads), 3-wheelers, UTV (or utility vehicles), Side-by-Sides (or SxS) and Six-Wheelers.
